Title:New Illinois Temporary Visitor
Drivers License Available
What is the new
Temporary Visitor Driver's License?
Effective January 1, 2005, the
Secretary of State's Office in
Illinois
began issuing "Temporary
Visitor Driver's Licenses"
(TVDL) for
non-citizens of the United States
who have been granted temporary,
legal entry into this country
and are temporarily residing in
the State of Illinois and ineligible
for a Social Security number.
This new law
allows J-1 exchange visitors and/or
their J-2 (dependents) who are
NOT eligible for Social Security
Numbers (SSN) to acquire an Illinois
Driver's License. Until January
1, 2005 those J exchange visitors
who were not eligible for a SSN
could not get a driver's license.
Please see this website for all
details and requirements:

Please note that applicants must
first apply at a Social Security
Office to receive written proof
of their ineligibility for a SSN.
This receipt of ineligibility
must then be taken to a specific
Driver's License Facility within
30 days of the application.
There currently is only one location
in Chicago that processes Temporary
Visitor Drivers License applications:
Chicago West Facility
5301 W. Lexington Ave.
Chicago, IL 60644
The facility is
only available to applicants of
Temporary Visitor
Drivers License on Mondays, open
8:00AM - 5:30PM.
